Stylish in her cherry-red Bo-Sox cap and sky-blue rain jacket, with a dazzling smile as her umbrella, Ellen kept her cool when the skies opened up early afternoon yesterday as we beat our way back from Plum Island to the Whaler's berth just upriver from the railroad bridge in Newburyport.
'Meant to post these pics yesterday when we got back from a day "at sea" with B & E on their own bottom -- a spiffy little Boston Whaler they keep at a marina along the Merrimack in Newburyport. With Ben at the helm, we sped downriver into the saltmarsh channels behind Plum Island, flushing out cormorants, terns, egrets and gulls along the way.
Unfazed by gray skies with occasional showers, Tuck was haughty in the face of the elements. His royal blue Eastern Salt cap and leaky orange windbreaker recalled our own cruising days meeting the challenges of "moisture, hair and other perils at sea."
When we got to the mouth of the Ipswich River, a couple of miles south and then west of our starting point, we experienced an old-home moment, recalling the time years back when Tuck and ourselves had run aground on our own bottom -- the yacht "Dove," a Redwing 30 sloop -- as we plied these waters to visit friends summering in the area.
Back at their stylish yet cozy homestead, B & E treated us to a groaning board of food and drink and got us up to speed on the latest family gossip.
When we got back home to Chelsea and tried to post, TypePad was
nowhere to be seen. Next morning we found out why when this
discouraging message popped up upon our opening the editing program:
TypePad downtime information. Due to the recent problems on TypePad you may have lost some data if you posted an entry between 12:30 am and 10:30 am PST on Wednesday. July 12th. For more information, please read this page on recovery options.
Don't you hate it when that happens? Fortunately, we had posted only one entry between 12:30 am and 10:30 am PST on Wednesday and had no trouble getting things back up to snuff.
Plum Island? Hunted ducks off there in the winter.
