"For Turkey's first beauty contest in 1929, Cumhuriyet newspaper launched a major publicity campaign. The humorous magazine Karagöz wrote on 9 February: 'Our associate Cumhuriyet wants Turkish women to enter the World Beauty Contest . . . The only trouble is that they suit our own fancy. They are not made to measure. As we all know, our bodies are not European but Turkish standard. Since we grow up at random, without sport or exercise, we all have a little bit of a paunch. We do not care much about beauty by measurement. For us beauty is eyes and brows, and the rest is empty talk!"
"A Turkish female journalist was stoned at a Muhammad Cartoon protest for not wearing a head scarf," notes Gateway Pundit [via InstaPundit]:
A group of protestors insisted that Aliye Cetinkaya get off the bus where she was reporting the march, as they claimed she was provoking the crowd. At this moment, somebody started reciting the Koran into a microphone.
Approximately 30 people then started throwing stones at Cetinkaya, seated with her legs dangling from the back of the vehicle and taking notes. They claimed that her clothes and way of sitting was inappropriate while the Koran was being read and shouted words of abuse at her.
Cetinkaya had to be rescued by her colleagues.
And we're supposed to be "respecting" and "understanding" the religious beliefs of these troglodytes? It's not going to happen. More than ever, we stand with the Danes, who just said no to Sharia. Cultures that trash half their population -- the distaff side -- are as stupid as it gets. But for oil, what do most of them contribute to the world economy? And it's always someone else's fault.
The Miss World contest of 2002, which was relocated from Nigeria after religious violence, was won by Miss Turkey, Azra Akin. So much for eyes, eyebrows and empty talk. We sure wish those hysterical Islamist men would relax and remember that girls just wanna have fun. It isn't all about you, guys. It takes two. "Male and female created he them."
Turkey itself, in light of the recent unpleasantness on the Cartoon Wars front, may have cooked its goose as far as entering the EU fold. On the home front, it's always the woman's fault. Farther afield, it's always the fault of the Great Satan and Little Satan. No western woman worth her salt will stand for it. Blogpal Teresa sounds a warning:
Hey women of the world -- you better pay close attention to this, because it starts small, in places like Turkey . . . then it spreads to "enlightened" countries like France and Germany . . . then it will come calling here. Are you ready? Are you going to stand against this? Are you going to raise your voices in protest of this woman's right to do her job without being harassed?
If you aren't ready to speak out against this tyranny, you better stock up on head scarves and burkhas. They will soon be part of your wardrobe. They will never be part of mine.
Never. These men are beyond pathetic.
Why thank you ma'am. We all have to speak out against these cretins. I hope mine is one little voice among millions! None of us can stand for long alone - but we can stand strong - together.
Wonderful post!

Right on! 10th-century Islam is not acceptable in the 21st century. Live in today's world or die should be the ultimatum of the West. Harsh, but the alternative is for the West to die.

Proud to stand with Goomp on this. "Right on, Sissy!" was my initial response before clicking to this Comments section. There's no room for appeasement on this issue. There is nothing here that a decent human being would want to appease.
