It was ever thus. The "I know best" people, with their usually impractical and prejudiced ideas of how human nature functions, clamoring for enforcement of these ideas. What is different is that academia has impregnated many of the wealthy such as those who control large sections of the media and the entetainment industry with these ideas.

I would say Stark and Finke have it right. People want a moderate amount of light to show the right path to follow. They do not wish the light to be so blinding that one can see nothing but the light.

I saw this front-page headline: "Kurds quietly ready for civil war," above the fold on my neighbor's paper this morning and just groaned.
