Sarah and A.J. dropped by Goomp's -- along with our sis-in-law Ellen and brother Ben, parents of the divine Miss S. -- for champagne and happy talk and a walk to the Pebble Beach over Labor Day Weekend before heading back to DC.
A native of Buffalo on the shores of Lake Erie, A.J. had passed a major test midday by dispatching his first hard-shell Down-East lobster in the rough without incident. The setting was Chauncey Creek Lobster Pier in Kittery Point, described in glowing terms by Travel & Leisure:
Chauncey Creek has lured the faithful since 1948 while blissfully remaining off the maps of northbound tourists. No ocean views here -- just a quiet tidal river amid a thick spruce forest. The policy is bring-your-own-everything: regulars show up with coolers full of beer, wine, salad, foie gras, you name it [and] choose your own lobster from the tank.
It doesn't sound half bad, as gauntlets go, unless you happen to be the lobster. Welcome to the family circle, A.J.

Just a fun old-time conservative holiday.

Years ago I did crab - Maryland crab fresh from the Chesapeake - which I loved. I've never done lobster though.
Sounds like it was a great time!

Next time we'll meet in Buffalo, and we'll see how you guys do with a bucket of wings. Or as we call it, The Great Lakes Gauntlet.
