Pope Benedict XVI holds an audience with journalists (screen shot from FOXNews live this morning c. 5 Eastern Daylight Time), praising their hard work and sacrifice and speaking of the possibilities for constructive communication among all peoples opened up by the media revolution.
The new pope is already ahead of the curve as he gains live TV coverage praising the media during his first audience with journalists c. 11 a.m. Central European Summer Time. Alternating among English, German, French and Italian, Benedict XVI welcomes the press and speaks of engaging the world through a continuing dialog in John Paul's footsteps (rough transcript):
I thank you for all you have done. The possibilities opened up for us by the media revolution are marvelous and extraordinary. The media is capable of reaching not only leaders, but masses of people, indeed, humanity.
I want to continue this dialog with you that John Paul II had. The revolution in the media puts the church in a position where it has to rethink its pastoral work. [applause]
[Recites The Lord's Prayer]
As the audience concludes and Benedetto leaves the stage, the Fox commentator asks about all the noise -- including excited children's voices -- in the press seating area. His guest answers:
The Italian media always bring their families to papal press events.
That's Italian! Bully, bully [pulpit].
