Normal rush-hour conditions prevail under rainy skies at the Hampton Toll Booth heading south this morning.
It was raining cats and dogs on our return trip to Chelsea from Goomp's this morning, but traffic moved right along through the Hampton Toll Booth. Nothing like our post-Christmas Ride from Hell -- three months back -- when a raging snowstorm produced white-out conditions and hour-long delays, not to mention white knuckles on our part (it was all a piece of cake for Tuck, a seasoned Vermont winter driver from his college days at Marlboro). As we blogged then:
Once at the toll booth, we found the roadway strewn with shattered automobile parts and the nose-smashed remnants of a multi-car pile-up.
What a difference a season makes. Not that rain can't be a huge problem when drivers don't use common sense. We had a near miss during a downpour not too long ago (don't remember exactly when), again on a return trip from Goomp's, when an SUV came up way too fast behind us on a slippery curve coming into Chelsea. Tuck caught him in the rearview mirror and slowed down, pulling off to the side. The SUV passed us, skidded and went careening into the median barrier, flipping over, landing on its roof and coming to rest only 100 feet ahead of us. There was that moment when time stood still and we weren't sure whether we were about to meet our maker.
Gene Kelly did one of the best renditions of the tune Singin' in the Rain. Can't remember what the movie was called unless it was named after the song.

Well, he was in an SUV... therefore indestructible - right? *grin* Apparently he forgot to read the fine print that says - the laws of physics still apply - even when driving this vehicle. (many people make that mistake).
And Goomp is remembering the movie Singin' In The Rain with Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor and Debbie Reynolds. It was a great dance routine. *grin*

Have usually had an SUV or truck around for years. ALWAYS remember the laws of physics! Worst wild ride was in a '77 Toyota; hard left turn onto a side street that was solid ice and went dooownnnhill into a main intersection! Hit both curbs without damage. Friend took same ride in a Jeep and broke all 5 wheels - right, after bouncing off both curbs he went backwards into a guard rail and took out the spare tire!

I think those automated breaking systems make some people think their vehicles are exempted from the laws of physics. DO be careful, OldeForce. :)
