"Dummer may end up staying in Governor Dummer Academy's name after all," reports Newburyport's Daily News re the caving of the school's trustees in the face of alum and parental pressure:
The Board of Trustees has decided to reconsider its decision to remove the 18th-century Newbury man's name from the school's title. The board had quietly voted in December to de-emphasize Dummer in the school's name, arguing its similarity to the word "dumb" hurts student recruitment. The trustees had not decided on a new name.
But when word of the change surfaced last week, pressure from alumni and students who wanted to preserve the name of the 242-year-old boarding school brought a change of heart, according to school officials.
Maybe they're not so dumb after all. Congratulations, Sarah, Heather, Ben, Ellen and all who have made this a cause celebre.
