Our sis was right. Installing the new Iomega CW-RW disk burner appears to have wiped out the computer's ability to detect the Pentax Optio 450 (see previous post). Susan of Mind of Mog guessed that something may have overwritten the driver and offered this ominous note:
Windows, depending on version, requires reinstalling 'bout every 6 months for earlier versions cause it messes stuff up.
Ours is XP, so maybe not so bad? Talked to the guy at Pentax -- really great service as far as reaching a pleasant and knowledgeable person right away. We tried a few things, including restoring the system to a previously-known working date (before Iomega was installed), to no avail. He gave us the name of their OS expert, and we've left a message for him to call.
Meanwhile, we tried using Iomega's "award-winning" site, which promises 24/7 live chat. Famous last words:
Please wait . . . This may take a few moments.
Godot has nothing on the good folks at Iomega. An hour and a half later, we were still waiting. Did some other things and tried again several times, but no go.
Our geek still hasn't gotten back to us, either, so we're relying on the back-up camera and waiting for the phone to ring.
Update: Finally got through to Iomega live chat with a workaround via the other computer (Win 98). There's some conflict or other with XP's Service Pack 2 security features. Omega refers to the problem on its "award-winning" site but doesn't adequately explain what to do about it. So we're chatting (i-mailing) with Jay, and he says while it sounds like conflicting drivers, that shouldn't be a problem as "XP writes its own drivers." At any rate, there's nothing Iomega can do. We'll have to call Microsoft. We asked whether Jay he had ever had the pleasure of trying to get help from Microsoft. The unintended irony of his reply was worth the wait:
Personally, no I have not. But they are going to tell you it's not their issue, right after they charge you for support.
Speaking of support, thanks for all your help, Jay.

I'm no expert but recommend you download appropriate driver from Iomega's website.
