Since the first time I met him, maybe 8 years ago Doggett always appeared to me to be an "Intellectual Moron."

What you have here is a "marketing agency" that has no idea of what to do to market a school. I am not a marketing major, but the work I do is analyzing the end result of marketing campaigns. If marketing is done by someone who knows what they are doing, the name becomes irrelevant.

What was their survey?

"What do you think of the name Governor Dummer Academy?"

When presented by itself, there is no incentive to consider anything else about the institution. People unfamiliar with it would be inclined to say... "Well, sounds like a bad name to me - you ought to change it."

I think they'll be in for a very unpleasant surprise when they actually LOSE name recognition when alumnae are not able to recall the new name, or colleges - familiar with the old name, also don't recognize the new name. That sort of thing.

I would look into the marketing company pushing this name change... how much background do they have in marketing education? Did they get this job because the company is headed by an alum? There is much to be critical of in all of this mess. And Goomp's post makes matters even worse... *sigh* Having a moron for a head man gives little hope that you will be successful in changing his mind.

I believe you're talking about Mr. Bragdon, the former headmaster, Mr. Doggett did not take over until my junior year at GDA, however, both men seem to be a a few matches short!

Thanks for the correction, Sarah. The email was signed by a Marty Doggett, presumably the former headmaster. I love your assessment of both men's intellectual capacities, right in line with Goomp's assessment of "intellectual morons."

I'm afraid you're right, Teresa, about the dynamics of this foolish project, but fortunately, alums like Sarah are on the case, so it may not be too late.

I have to say that I do hold a certain amount of respect for Doggett, after all I did receive the Headmaster's Cup from him my senior year so he is a good judge of character ;). However, I feel that the name change is being done for the wrong reasons. After all, it is a school not a business. I think it is safe to say that with the amount of applicants they receive each year Governor Dummer has the reputation as a very good school.

Hi, Heather. Thanks for weighing in. Fun and funny and well said!

I ned a frend
