The fundamental point of President Bush's war policy is that democracies don't start wars -- that the reason there are terrorists who can recruit people to blow themselves up in the act of mass murder is because there is no freedom to provide hope for the future," writes Mark Noonan of Blogs for Bush:
By toppling the Taliban, removing the Saddamites and refusing to deal with Arafat, we have put the theory to the test, and now it is crunch time. We'll know very shortly whether or not the policy works -- though, of course, we may cheat a bit by pointing out that Afghanistan, much further along the road to liberty than Palestine or Iraq, is proving an amazing success. So amazing, indeed, that the MSM refuses to report on it as it messes up the MSM theme of Utter Disaster At All Times.
To a large degree the Arab/Muslim world has been a Dark Continent for us, lacking until our recent actions any semblance of freedom, There has been no way to asses what the people of the Arab/Muslim world wanted. We'll soon start to know what they want as they express their desires with their votes. Until then, MSM writers assuring us with certainty that we're hated in the Arab world need to be ignored entirely.
We've always ignored their pronouncements and shall continue to do so for the foreseeable future.
Update: Natan Sharansky, who has the president's ear, expands on the topic in today's Opinion Journal:
Whether the election of Abu Mazen will be a turning point in the search for peace depends critically on whether the Free World, led by the U.S., is prepared to link its policies toward his new government to the degree of freedom the Palestinian Authority affords its own citizens.
If Abu Mazen is a willing partner in this effort, his government should receive legitimacy, financial aid, territory and support for statehood. But if he is unwilling to do so, all support for his regime should be withheld.
