Ailanthus altissima -- Tree of Heaven -- drawing by Sissy Willis (pastel on kraft paper, c. 1/8 scale). From the Amazon blurb re A Tree Grows in Brooklyn: "Like the Tree of Heaven that grows out of cement or through cellar gratings, resourceful Francie struggles against all odds to survive and thrive." It calls to mind the struggle of those Ramadi women waiting for their sewing machines.
Thanks to all you kind and gentle (not to mention wise and witty) folks -- you know who you are -- who have contributed your hard-earned money to Sissy's Sewing Circle at Spirit of America's Friends of Iraq Blogger Challenge. Last we looked, our project was way over the top of our stated goal -- two sewing machines @ $475 each for a total of $950 for the women of Ramadi. We're up to $1160 now and counting. Only $265 more would get us one more machine. Any takers?
We'll soon be off to a champagne-and-lobster birthday luncheon in our honor hosted by our sis, so it's up to you. Thanks again so much for supporting this great project to help Iraqi women help themselves. The challenge ends today at midnight (EST?). Oh, and it doesn't hurt our standing in the blogosphere, either -- Did you notice who else is in the top ten of that Friends of Iraq Bloggers Challenge list? Be still, my foolish heart.
