At her bridal shower last May, Regan and guests oohed and aahed over "A Bride's Secret Recipe Starter-Kit," a compilation of family recipes collected by the bride-to-be's about-to-be mother-in-law (our own dear sister).
Touted by the Wall Street Journal's Weekend Section the other day as the trendiest gift of all, a book of family recipes -- in this case, Susie's shower gift to Regan last spring -- has come home to roost in a most nestwarming way. The young bride chose one of our own "secret" recipes, that for turkey stuffing with apples, sausage and garlic, for her own family meal this year. She just e-mailed with news that her mom and one of her sisters are demanding the recipe. Of such threads are family tapestries made.
Bridesmaids pored over the secret recipes at Regan's shower in May.
Top honors for Most Secret went to a food-stained card handprinted at age eight by the groom -- our beloved nephew -- of his great grandmother's chocolate fudge recipe. Honorable mentions went to Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches plus French Bread using Pillsbury's dough ready to go. Also winning kudos were our mother's Finnish Meatballs, Beef Stroganoff and Bermuda Fish Chowder and sis-in-law Ellen's father Eddie's Beans.
It is hard to beat the warmth of family love and tradition.
