Give a woman a dress, and she is clad for a day. Give her a sewing machine, and she can clothe and feed her family for a lifetime. Spirit of America is helping Iraqi women help themselves through "Sewing Machines for Women in Ramadi," a pet project of ours blogged here last summer. Another favorite of ours is SOA's latest project, "Friends of Democracy," blogged here. We've also donated unrestricted funds, but this time, we're taking a stand: As the women sew, so goes the nation.
Put your money where our mouth is: Friends of Iraq Blogger Challenge sisu Donation Page.
What does an Iraqi woman want? For many of them, a sewing machine of one's own can make all the difference between soul-draining poverty and soul-feeding financial independence. We've adopted Spirit of America's "Sewing Machines for Women in Ramadi" as our project of choice in SOA's Friends of Iraq Blogger Challenge. Jim Hake explains:
Friends of Iraq Blogger Challenge has begun. The Challenge is a friendly fundraising competition among leading bloggers in support of Spirit of America projects in Iraq . . . Right now we are inviting bloggers to participate in the Challenge. It's easy. After bloggers sign up (now) then during the fundraising period (Dec. 1 - 15) they encourage their readers to donate to the project the blogger has selected, and they link to a donation page on our site. We handle everything else and keep track of real-time results.
We invite you, our treasured readers -- if you are so inclined -- to help put the nimble fingers of Iraqi womanhood to work by enabling them to mend for themselves. Click here to contribute to the cause. It's a good thing.
I do like your take off on "as Maine goes so goes the nation". I shall be contributing to the cause.

Thanks so much, Goomp! Let them sew, let them sew, let them sew.

Of course, you realise that in the eyes of a lot of moonbats, the fact you're enabling these women to make things instead of vaulting them in one bound from indescribable poverty to Associate Professor of Queer Theory at Fallujah University is because you're a tool of the capitalist oppressors.
I'm only half-joking here. Anyone who complains about 'sweatshops' is guilty of just that sort of muddled thinking.
