Tiny takes shelter in the little house just after breakfast as the first snowfall of the season transforms the landscape into a winter wonderland. It's a heavy, wet snow -- about 3-4 inches accumulation -- that coats the branches and persistent leaves of the Silver Maple (Acer saccharinum) -- blogged here and here. The lower branches are touching the ground, and just as we were opening the door to let Tiny out, a large upper branch came crashing down. Weak wood is one of that species' drawbacks, together with gross feeding roots that clog water lines and weedy seeds that mature, fall to the ground and sprout before most trees have even thought about flowering. But oh, so lovely in summer with its spreading, weeping habit and the shimmering, dappled shade of its deeply cut leaves.
Snowkitty!
