Jimmy Carter accepts Nobel Peace Price, December 2002 with these immortal words: "I'm convinced that Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, Jews and others can embrace each other in a common effort to alleviate human suffering and to espouse peace."
What did impotent testosterone-driven folk -- the suicide bombers of today -- use to draw blood from their enemies before Alfred Nobel invented dynamite? Knives, longbows, shotguns? Just like Jimmy Carter's utopian cluelessness, human nature never changes, but the weapons available to the everyday loser angry at the world get exponentially deadlier by the day with the march of civilization. Alfred Nobel's chickens have been coming home to roost of late, Bandaid Peace Prizes notwithstanding. 'Wonder what he'd think of the cojones-challenged wonders who've been basking in the glow of his name of late -- Yasser Arafat, Kofi Annan/the UN and, in 2002, -- are you sitting down, Al? -- Jimmy Carter:
And apparently the five members of the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize Committee scarcely thought Carter deserved it this year. Honoring Carter, said Committee chairman Gunnar Berge, "should be interpreted as a criticism of the line that the current [Bush] administration has taken. It’s a kick in the leg to all that follow the same line as the United States.'
May we assume Alfred Nobel is turning over in his grave?
It is my opinion that during the 20th century the West was approaching its peak as a civilization. Although perhaps its maximum asendancy was in the late 20th Century, it had planted the seeds of its decline in the 1920s and 30s. The general lack of moral fibre and the hubris of the elites makes me wonder if the 21st Century is going to witness the fall of the West? Pax Vobiscum paints the picture of this foolish hubris.
