Bittersweet Nightshade (Solanum dulcamara), also called Climbing Nightshade (x4), belongs to Solanaceae, the same family as potato, tomato and tobacco.
These lovely blossoms are clambering amongst the leaves of our Forsythia, whose own blossoms, now long gone, emerged before the leaves in April. Unless you're into weed identification, you might never have noticed this unassuming member of the potato family. Most American gardeners would identify the altogether different but familiar native woody vine, Celastrus scandens, as Bittersweet.
